When asked who you think sold the most band merchandise over the past year, we’d expect you all to guess One Direction.
There are several reasons why this would come as no surprise to us. First, they just completed a worldwide stadium tour, in which they no doubt sold hundreds of dollars of merch at every show. After all, they were named the biggest selling touring artists of 2014.
Second, they are one of the most popular bands on the planet at the moment, and their online sales as well as secondhand sales in department stores must be through the roof.
New information reveals that One Direction had the most paraphernalia sold on U.K. eBay over the past three months—142,000 units! That’s 84,000 more than that of the second highest seller of merchandise, Prince.
Over the same time period of three months, 58,000 units of Prince merchandise 50,000 units of Elvis merchandise were sold. The Beatles’ memorabilia sold 36,000 units and U2’s sold 30,000.
The next highest sellers of musical merchandise on U.K. eBay were Pink Floyd, Michael Jackson, Kylie Minogue, Madonna, and Beyonce, respectively.
It’s just amazing that in the lineup of crazy good artists listed above that One Direction would come out on top. Out of all these musicians, the 1D boys are by far the youngest and the newest to the music scene.
Although amidst all their other successes and milestones, this doesn’t really come as much of a shock. We’re really proud of our boys!
